OPSEU College Support Staff Marilou Martin Scholarship Spring 2018

About the Scholarship

OPSEU College Support Staff workers are once again offering the “OPSEU College Support Staff Marilou Martin Scholarship.” This scholarship is given to full-time students in one of the 24 Colleges of Applied Arts & Technology (CAAT) in Ontario. Support Staff local unions across the province fundraise to offer these scholarships to the students we proudly work with.
This year, we are pleased to offer an additional semester with five (5) x $1,200 scholarships.

Scholarship Theme

Bill 148 – Fair Workplaces, Better Jobs Act, 2017
On November 27, 2017, Bill 148 received Royal Assent and passed in the legislature, also called the Fair Workplaces, Better Jobs Act, 2017. The government recognized, with assistance from the voice of union representatives, how rapidly Ontario’s economy was changing, and how workplaces are becoming less secure with part-time and contract jobs on the rise. Unions in Ontario have been lobbying for changes in legislation due to the increase of precarious employment for a number of years.
Bill 148 introduced many “pro-employee” changes including expanded protections and improved standards by making amendments to both the Employment Standards Act, 2000 (“ESA”) as well as the Labour Relations Act, 1995 (“LRA).
